My Chemical Romance

"Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge"

Reprise Records 2004

CD Review By Keith Joseph, Rockstarpix.TV

Their debut album "I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love" showed a young band that had great potential of being a good band. Their second album, released by Reprise Records, made that great potential a reality. The album is filled with great melodies and fast, pummeling songs. Three Cheers is a concept-horror album. The story of the record is a man trying to get back with his supposedly dead lover. To do this he must kill 1,000 men and they will be reunited. The artwork of the album is made to look as if it is made for a movie and not a music album. The artwork on the album is also credited mostly to the lead singer Gerard Way who not only shows his artistic and creativity in his music but also with a paintbrush. Gerard's voice is comforting yet horrific as it changes in such tracks as "You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison". The song is one of the top tracks on the album and shows a lot of transition, from calm to blistering fast.

The first single of the album "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" is the odd-ball track of the record but doesn't take a way from the album at all. This song is more of a pop-rock song than the usual MCR song. The song also includes a guitar solo, that sounds as if it would fit together in a classic rock song rather than a pop punk song, by guitarists Frank Iero and Ray Toro. "Give 'em Hell Kid" begins the second track with a fast paced bass line by Mike Way, who is the brother of Gerard, that makes you want to jump around and thrash everything in the room and not think twice about it. Gerard Way's voice is in control through out the whole album. He shows so much emotion through out the album, he will calmly whisper or frantically scream when needed to brighten the mood or change the mood to a gray shade. "The Ghost Of You" is the slowest song on the album, it gives the listener a break from the fast paced style that they play. "The Interlude" is a minute track that gives you another minute to relax and "Thank You For The Venom" then returns you to the thrill ride of the record. "Hang'em High" begins with a sound as if there is going to be a western showdown and within 10 seconds the band rips out into it's original style. "Cemetery Drive" is the catchiest song on the album and it begins with a slow drumbeat played by Matt Pelessier and Gerard calmly singing until the chorus speeds up the tempo. The last track "I Never Told You What I Do For A Living" finishes the record perfectly with a blazing fast, track that proves the ending of the story. "They gave us two shots to the back of the head. And we're. All dead. Now." are the last lyrics sung on the album, which concludes the story.

My Chemical Romance has written an album that is very original in a scene that seems to be very generic at times. The album shows influences from bands such as Thursday and Thrice but the way it is written with the idea of a concept record brings to mind such acts as Coheed And Cambria and Sleep Station. "Three Cheers..." also showcases the type of energy that you would see from a fellow band from New Jersey, Senses Fail. This album is one record that rock fans will fall in love no matter what genre preference they have. The album highlights the very bright future of the young New Jersey band. A great major-label debut for this quintet. I'm looking forward to music in the future from this outfit and catch them on tour because their performance is amazing.
