Let It Enfold You

Vagrant Records/Drive Thru Records 2004

CD Review by Keith Joseph, Rockstarpix.TV

Senses Fail’s debut EP was put out by Drive Thru Records in mid-2003 and they became one of the hottest bands on the label. They recorded the album “Let It Enfold You” and expected to release it in February of 2004. After many legal issues and 8 months of skirmishes, the album was finally released by Vagrant Records in September of this year.

“Tie Her Down” is a great opening track for the album. It is exactly what you would expect from a Senses Fail song. A fast, aggressive song leads into a head-banging chorus. The background vocals, that consist mainly of melodic screaming, and Buddy Nielsen’s vocals match perfectly to really make a good opening track. “Lady In A Blue Dress” is a great song, more of pop-punk tune with the emo-core influence. This song is very catchy and could very easily be the band’s next single from the album. “Buried A Lie” starts with acoustic guitar and leads in to dual guitar playing by Dave Miller and Garret Zablocki. This is the most pop-oriented song on the record, with the usual and expected dark lyrics from Buddy. This song is the first single off of the album. The fifth track on the album “Bite To Break Skin” begins with a riff and just rips out in to a great rock song. The song is full of energy and will could lead to teenagers moshing in their living rooms. Michael Glit’s backup vocals and bass playing really allow this song to be so attacking.

“Slow Dance” begins at a slow pace and speeds up as the chorus approaches. The song is not as heavy as most of the bands songs. The song is very catchy and filled with great vocal harmonies. The song speeds up towards the end with a break down and the chorus repeats shortly after. “Irony Of Dying On Your Birthday” is a very cut throat song. Buddy’s screams and Dan Trapp’s drum playing are the highlights of the song. The tempo changes throughout the song really make it great. The song shows elements of metal, hardcore and pop-punk. “Angela Baker And My Obsession With Fire” is the next track and has the same type of energy as the previous track. Buddy’s voice is full of emotion and goes along perfectly with the tempo of the song. “Martini Kiss” is the closing song on the record. This song is the most metal-oriented song on the album. The growls in the chorus make the song much more hyper than most of the songs on the album. As the song finishes the tempo speeds up and is a great way to end the record. Senses Fail have a very bright future in the music business. They are still a very young band with a lot of talent. The music and singing on the album are magnificent showing a lot of aggressiveness and youthful energy. The downside of the album are the lyrics. A listener who listens for great lyrics may not find this album very enjoyable. At times it seems as if the lyrics were written by a depressed 14 year old. Almost every song is about some type of depression or some type of ill-thoughts a person may have. The band’s image is very apparent with this record.

The artwork is filled with skulls, and dark, eerie pictures. The cover art is disturbing yet can show truth to some people in the world such as Charles Manson. This albums would be suggested to fans of bands such as My Chemical Romance, The Bled, From First To Last and Finch. Keep your eyes open for this band because they will be the next big thing in the emo-core/ pop-punk genre.
